Villahermosa is the capital city of the Mexican state of Tabasco, and the municipal seat of Centro municipality. Villahermosa reported a population of 658,524 in the 2005 census, whereas Centro municipality had 558,524. The municipality covers an area of 1,612 km² (622.4 sq mi). Tabasco's political powers reside here. It is the main city of the state of Tabasco and is home to the state's largest concentration of population. The city is an important business center for the Mexican oil industry. Also known as La Esmeralda del Sureste (The Emerald of the Southeast), Villahermosa is a modern city rich in natural resources, both for agriculture and farming.Founded officially on June 24, 1596 by Spaniards on the banks of the Grijalva River under the name of Villa Hermosa, in 1826 the village was raised to the rank of city under the name of San Juan Bautista (Saint John the Baptist). The city was captured and occupied by U.S. forces after the battle of Tabasco during the Mexican-American War. |

The Zona Luz is the oldest part of Villahermosa . Its streets have preserved the architecture and spirit of yesteryear. Along its walkways, the sounds of the marimba blend with

the noises of the tropics. This part of Villahermosa contains one of the most striking buildings in the city, the House of Tiles and the enchanting Carlos Pellicer Museum-House. The Carlos Pellicer Cámara House-Museum This is a typical Tabascan house and the birthplace of the well-known poet, Carlos Pellicer. It is located at Calle Saenz, No. 203 and today it is a museum dedicated to the life of this personality. The Cathedral This church was built in the 1960s, and the sober but beautiful façade is a reminder of the old baroque style; its interior has an old image of Nuestra Señora de la Conquista (Our Lady of the Conquest). The previous building was destroyed by an anti-religious attack at the beginning of the 20th century, but it is thought to have been a monument built in 1614. |

park is a memorable experience. The tour begins in a tropical forest full of the magical sounds of the jungle. You will be astonished at all the animals you recognize, from white-tailed deer, scarlet macaws, toucans and monkeys to enormous iguanas. After leaving the forest you cross a hanging bridge over crocodiles and turtles. A van takes you to the pastureland where you can observe fauna from other parts of the world, such as giraffes, zebras and antelopes, all wandering freely. To round off the tour, a boat takes you to the El Pozo lagoon. Yumka ' is just 16 km outside Villahermosa , next to the airport. Villahermosa Ecotourism Caves There are several caves hidden away in the thick tropical vegetation in the sierra bordering Chiapas , south and southeast of Villahermosa . |
