Tuxtla Gutiérrez is a municipality and the capital city of the state of Chiapas, Mexico. It is the seat of the local public administration, the local authorities, and of the federal government delegations in the state. It covers more than 40% of the municipal territory, and continues to grow.

The city lies inside the Depression of Chiapas, between the Tuxtla valley on the Northeast, Meseta de Copoya on the South, Mount Mactumatza on the Southwest and the mountain range on the North which includes Animas, Don Ventura and the Sumidero, which includes the National Park with the same name.

The valley begins on the border at the city of Berriozabal and continues until the Rio Grande. The valley is at an altitude of 540 m. A large part of the city of Tuxtla Gutiérrez lies in this valley, while the rest lies over the northern mountain range.

The Faustino Miranda Botanical Garden is located next to the Sabinal river in Tuxtla Gutiérrez, Chiapas, Mexico. It was founded in 1951 under the trusteeship of Dr. Faustino Miranda

President Gordon B. Hinckley announced that the Church would build thirty-two smaller temples around the world before the end of 2000. The Tuxtla Gutiérrez México Temple is one of these small temples and was welcomed by the many local Church members. Because of the mountainous terrain, travel in and out of the area is difficult and the closest Mormon temple for members was in Mexico City — a 20-hour drive. The temple in Tuxtla Gutiérrez serves more than 18,000 members in southeastern Mexico.

 
 

San Cristóbal de las Casas, the former capital of the state of Chiapas, is an attractive colonial city with narrow, cobbled streets located in the central valley

highlands. Founded in 1528 as Villa Real de Chiapa, it is a mere 1-1/2 hour drive from the modern capital, Tuxtla Gutierrez, and is in an area surrounded by indigenous villages and a wealth of crafts, archaeological treasures and indigenous culture. The city is at an altitude of 2,100 meters (6890 feet) above sea level. It´s anual mean temperature is 18º C. (65º F).
