Huatulco, centered around the town of La Crucecita, is a tourist development in Mexico. It is located on the Pacific coast of the state of Oaxaca. Huatulco's tourism industry is centered around its nine bays. Huatulco has a wide variety of accommodations from rooms for rent, small economy hotels, vacation condominiums, bed and breakfasts, along with several luxury resorts standing on the shores of Tangolunda Bay. The Camino Real, Las Brisas, Gala and Barceló are examples of the most popular larger resorts in the area.

The rugged terrain of the area divides the coastline into numerous isolated bays (bahías) and beaches (playas). I will group the beaches into the areas of Santa Cruz, Tangolunda, Bahía
Conejos, and the area west of Santa Cruz. You may wish to refer to the Map of Huatulco or a regional map of the Oaxacan Coast (East). Also, please refer to the scuba section for an important note on the variability of wave strength due to phases of the moon.

"Huatulco Ecotours" are growing in both popularity and number throughout the Bays of Huatulco. The mountain areas surrounding the Copalita River are also home to other

natural treasures worth exploring, including the Copalitilla Cascades. Thirty kilometers (19 miles) north of Tangolunda at 394m (1,300 ft.) above sea level, this group of waterfalls average between 20 to 25m (65-80 ft.) in height form natural whirlpools and clear pools for swimming. The area is also popular for horseback riding and rappelling.

La Entrega, including Maguey and San Agustín, are noted for offshore snorkeling. Several of the Huatulco beaches are completely undeveloped, so you will need to bring your own snack pack in the backpack. Boatmen from the cooperative arrange all return pickups at scheduled times. Prices run about $15 for 1 to 10 persons at La Entrega, and $35 for a trip to Maguey and Organo bays. The farthest bay is San Agustinillo; that all-day trip will run $80 in a private boat.

Bays of Chachacual Bahia is located southwest of the Santa Cruz Bay. This bay is only accessible by a 30-minute boat ride. It has lush lowland jungle vegetation and mangroves, which are now part of an ecological reserve at the Parque Nacional. The two virgin

beaches, Chachacual and La India, have fine white sand, a gentle slope and clear warm waters. These beaches are ideal for observing marine life, including moray eels, jellyfish and coral. In the Santa Cruz area and La Crucecita there are hotels, trailer parks and restaurants serving local and international fare.
