Ensenada (sometimes shortened to "Ensenada, B. C.") is the third-largest city in the Mexican state of Baja California. It is located 116 km (about 70 miles) south of Tijuana, at 31°47′N, 116°36′W. The city had a 2005 census population of 460,075. Ensenada is also the municipal seat of Ensenada Municipality, one of the five into which the state is divided. Ensenada is locally referred as La Bella Cenicienta del Pacífico (The Cinderella of the Pacific).

Located in the Bahía de Todos Santos — an inlet of the Pacific Ocean — Ensenada is an important commercial and fishing port as well as a cruise ship stop. There is also a navy base, an army base and a military airfield, which functions as an airport of entry into Mexico.

Grey whale watching

The ride to Todos Santos was a bit longer then I had expected from the resort Melia Cabo Real in Los Cabos. I have travelled single-lane highways (with paved shoulders) in Michigan ,but this was a bit of a challenge with various farm animals within arms
reach of the car and semis that were not meant to travel mountainous terrain. 40 miles equated to an hour and twenty minute ride. Friendly people in the dirt-floored shops as well as educated Gallery owners and personel were available to help with questions and conversation.

Gray whales can be seen from the highway turnouts in Big Sur from December through April. December to early February the California Gray Whales are migrating south. Beginning in February you begin seeing whales migrating back to Alaska with their newborn babies by their sides.

There is sometimes what appears to be an overlap in migration patterns with some whales still heading south while others are moving north. On their northern migration they swim close to shore, with their babies on the shore side. It has been said this is to protect them from attacks from Great White Sharks. This is often when the best viewing can take place because they are moving more slowly because of their young calves and also they are swimming against the current.

La Bufadora

Valle de Guadalupe
Located at 17 miles south of Ensenada by taking the Transpeninsular highway to Maneadero. From there follow the clearly marked road that goes west and takes you all tha way to La Bufadora, which is located at the end of the Punta Banda Peninsula. The scenic paved road offers you a beautiful panoramic view of the Ensenada Bay, its beaches and Todos Santos Island.
